Gagging isn't choking.
Mini Bites are designed for this stage. But every parent starting solids should know the difference between the noise that's normal and the moment that isn't.
Gagging
The body's reflex working as designed.
- Loud — coughing, retching, dramatic
- Tongue pushes food forward, not back
- Eyes might water, face flushes
- They sound alarming. They usually aren't.
Choking
When the airway is actually blocked.
- Silent — no cough, no cry, no sound
- Can't breathe, can't make noise
- May go pale or blue around the lips
- Body distress, not noise
Frequently asked questions
Mini Bites are designed for this exact stage. Each piece is soft enough to mash between your fingers — that's the test. Anything that resists isn't going in the box. They're shaped to be picked up and gummed, not swallowed whole.
What you'll see at first is gagging, not choking. Gagging is the body's reflex working: tongue pushes food forward, eyes water, they sound dramatic. It's loud and it's normal. Choking is silent.
Stay with them, keep them upright, and let them lead the pace. For a proper refresher on the gag-vs-choke difference, our Introducing Solids guide walks through it.
Look for five signs: they sit up with minimal support, the tongue-thrust reflex has gone (food stays in their mouth instead of pushing back out), they bring their hands and toys to their mouth, they watch you eat with interest and open their mouth, and they're around 6 months old.
No. Teeth aren't the gear — gums are. Babies gum soft food into something they can swallow using nothing but pressure and saliva. Mini Bites are soft enough that no teeth are required. That's the whole point of the texture we've designed.
Pull one piece out of the freezer at a time, leave the rest in. Heat from frozen in the microwave on medium-high for about 60 seconds, then let it sit for 2–3 minutes to come down to a safe serving temp. Always test on the inside of your wrist before handing it over — frozen food can have hot pockets after a microwave.
Serve on a plate or directly on the high-chair tray. Let them pick it up themselves. Don't pre-load the spoon. The whole point of BLW is they're driving.
One to two pieces is plenty at first. They're not eating to fill up — they're eating to explore. Milk is still where most of their calories come from at 6 months. The food is the practice round.
If they're going hard and asking for more, give them more. If they're throwing it on the floor or shutting their mouth, the meal's over. Trust them. They're better at reading their hunger than we are.
Totally normal. Most babies need 8 to 12 exposures to a new food before they accept it. That's not a Tiny Beets thing, that's a baby thing.
Offer the same piece again the next day, or the next meal. Pair it with something they've eaten before. Don't make a fuss either way — pressure makes refusal worse.
If after a couple of weeks they're flat-out rejecting every piece in the box, send us a message and we'll sort you out.
Every ingredient is listed plainly on every pack — no hidden "natural flavours" code-words, no fillers. Common allergens (dairy, fish, eggs, gluten, soy) are called out on the label whenever they're present.
Snapper, Potato & dill bites - Fish
Banana & hemp Muffins - Gluten, Egg, Dairy
If you're still working through introducing allergens for the first time, our Introducing Allergens guide walks through how to do it safely.
Yes. All the meats in Mini Bites are halal-certified. We're one of the only Australian baby food brands that bothers.
Up to 12 months from the production date — it's printed on every pack.
Once you've heated a piece, eat it within that meal. Don't cool it down and reheat for later. If they don't finish a piece, bin the rest, don't save it.
Absolutely. A lot of parents pair a Mini Bite with a familiar smooth puree — it gives baby something they trust while they're figuring out the new texture. Our Transition to Textures Bundle is built for exactly that approach if you want a starter pack made for the bridge.
Most supermarket finger foods are puffed grain — air, starch, and not much else. Mini Bites are real meals: chef-made, freezer-fresh, real veg, real protein, real cooking. The kind of food you'd plate up for yourself, just in a baby-grippable size.
You'll pay a bit more per piece. You'll also know what's actually in it.
We pack and freeze your order fresh, then ship insulated across Australia. Order before Tuesday 11:30pm AEDT and it'll go out for delivery that week. Full delivery info is on our Shipping & Delivery page.
The difference, in three lines.
What changes when the box arrives.
- Bub gagging on a chunky rice cake from the supermarket aisle.
- Bin full of half-eaten puffs that turned into floor mess.
- Googling "is BLW safe?" at 9pm again.
- Six chef-made finger foods already in the freezer.
- They pick it up, gum it down. You drink your coffee.
- Every piece soft enough to mash with your fingers. No guesswork.

"My nine month old loved these!"
"Real beef, real veggies and real herbs - that you can really taste! Flavour explosion is an accurate description and these meatballs look and taste so healthy too. No nasties whatsoever which I’m so grateful for. Can crumble and fall apart a bit when heated but bubs still managed to pick all the bits off her plate and clearly loved the taste."
"Oh my gosh these are so yummy, I nibble off bubs plate and want to order some for myself! Quality product and you know it’s packed full of nutrients , the koftas look and smell and taste like *real food* and that’s a huge thing for me to have ready made + real food - stashed in the freezer ready to go and that tastes amazing too!"

A daycare kitchen in Port Adelaide. August 2020.
I was running the kitchen at a daycare in Port Adelaide, cooking lamb and stews and curries for thirty kids who ate everything I made. A mum at pickup asked, "They eat so well here, what are you doing differently?" I said I was just cooking food I'd eat myself. The next week she came back and asked if she could take some home. Then another mum did, then another, then one of them said: "You should make this a business. No one's doing this in Adelaide." So I did.
Frozen baby food gets a bad rap and it shouldn't. We snap-freeze every batch within hours of cooking, which locks in nutrients and flavour better than a "fresh" jar sitting on a shelf for six months. No salt, no sugar, no preservatives, no fillers. Every ingredient on the label is something I'd cook with at home, and if I wouldn't put it in front of my own kid, it doesn't go in the box.
We cook one big run a week. Orders close Tuesday at 11:30pm, then Wednesday, Thursday and Friday I'm in the kitchen cooking the lot. Boxes ship from Friday and arrive on your doorstep over the next few days, depending on the state. The whole rhythm exists so every meal you get is days old, not months. That's the point.
